the most heartbreaking Winners Circle round ever
The $100,000 Pyramid: August 31, 1988 - Part 1
The $100,000 win in the second round by Kerri Ethridge is well-known and available here. I had never seen the first round of that episode until just now. It's my opinion, but in all the versions of the Pyramid over the decades, this one round sticks out like no other.
Teresa Ganzel (also) gave the clues in the first round and did a fantastic job on some very tough categories, except ...

I understand this is a heartbreaker, but I don't think we can say with absolute certainty that Jenny would have won without Teresa's slip. She only had four seconds left after saying tame. So, would she have said Spanish speaking countries within four seconds? Very possible, but not a given, especially if Teresa couldn't come up with more clues quickly. Well, of course, playing what ifs could lead us to imagine Jenny saying tame just after the buzzer. That would have been just as heartbreaking.

It should be a rule that if a celebrity partner makes a clear major screwup like that - not just a bad play, but actually a full-on screwup like that - then the celebrity should pay the price difference for that particular event out of his or her pocket. The contestant may still lose in a tournament or something because of it, but at least there was some payback and consequence to the celeb.

She actually blurted Spain quickly but it was enough to buzz her even if she didn't complete the word, it was still enough to convey the subject and subsequent buzzer on it. As Dick Clark says, and it's very true, this has been played literally thousands of times and blurting out a part of the subject or outright saying it, happens all the time, even to the best players, and sadly she did.

USC entered this game ranked 18/14 (AP/Coaches Polls) nationally while Ohio St was ranked 6/5 (AP/Coaches). Although Ohio St boasted future NFL stars Mike Tomczak (QB), Cris Carter (WR), Keith Byars (RB) and Chris Spielman (LB), the Trojans upset the highly ranked Buckeyes with a swarming defense and efficient offense. Tim Green (USC QB) and Jack Del Rio (USC LB) earned the Rose Bowl MVP awards. Equally impressive was that USC had earlier defeated conference rival Washington (ranked #1 nationally at the time) to qualify for the Rose Bowl as PAC-10 Conference Champions. Both teams played very hard on both sides of the ball. Both teams scored long-range field goals: Ohio St PK Rich Spangler kicked a record 52-yard field goal for the Buckeyes while USC Trojan PK Steve Jordan had two 51-yard field goals.
